Year 10 Drama
Course Description
This year 10 course is a continuation of building the elements, techniques and conventions of Drama. The skills learnt are taught through the historical focus of Commedia dell'arte (comedy) Melodrama theatre form. Further creativity is developed through devising and building on improvisations skills. The Drama technologies are introduced to develop students' skills in lighting, sound and theatre design. These aspects are linked to the NCEA senior Drama curriculum which is a literacy based subject.

Course Overview
Term 1
Improvisation- Theatre sports competition with Nelson College for Girls'- Students learn to work in a group effectively.
Students learn the skills of improvisation, thinking on their feet, accepting offers and problem solving.
Techniques of drama- Confidence in using voice, body, movement and use of space to create a character.
Term 2
Greek Theatre- Students learn the features of this theatre form through the history of Greek theatre. They apply their skills of performing in a mask to produce the play Odysseus.
Devised theatre- Students work on creating their own script around a current issue that is meaningful to them OR opt for roles within the senior production which is 'Shuriken' in 2022. Students who take on this role will be eligible for level one credits.
Semester A

Pathway
Year 10 Drama teaches valuable life skills which are essential for 21st Century learners. You will learn the skills of communication, confidence, collaboration, creativity, and empathy. Students work in small groups on scripts where they develop characters within situations. The students have an opportunity to perform their own devised work as well as collaborating on the senior play for level one credits.
Assessment Information
Students receive verbal and written feedback regularly as they work through each assessment.Performances are videoed and there may be an opportunity for parents to view their work within a performance- i.e.- The senior play.
Pathway Tags
Lawyer, medical practitioner, project coordinator, teacher, creative industries, event organiser. This course provides a solid foundation to work and problem solve creatively in groups. Students are asked to examine society and characters within communities. The importance of verbal and non- verbal communication is taught and confidence built in public speaking.,
