Course Description Recommended Prior Learning

A strong desire to utilise technological and theory knowledge as well as skills in a workshop environment and to create designs that display creativity and inventiveness.




This course is an introduction into CAD, designing and working with wood-based projects.  The Main unit introduces the students to CAD (Computer Aided Design using SolidWorks) and gives them an opportunity to design (with CAD if they want) and make something in wood for a take home project.  



Course Overview

Term 1
Students will be introduced to and taught the basics of designing in Solidworks.
Students will be given a basic Brief which they will develop through the design process while creating something for themselves or a member of the family.

Term 2
Students will spend the first half of this term finishing their design, following the design process which they were introduced to in term 1.
Students will gain hand skill relevant to the project they have designed.
Students will start production of their design.
Students will be introduced to the external standard. This is a research paper based on materials (to be completed for homework)

Term 3
Continue production of their design
Finish off the external standard to be handed in week 5
Finish constructing the product they designed and get it evaluated

Term 4
Tidy up any paperwork and finishing touches to the product designed

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Contribution by prior arrangement towards larger projects with take home value may be required. Covered shoes are Compulsory for practical sessions. Access to a computer at home will be required for One Note and CAD assignments.
