Year 10 Drama

Course Description

This year 10 course is a continuation of building the elements, techniques and conventions of Drama. The skills learnt are taught through the historical focus of Physical Theatre (Comedy) and Melodrama Theatre form. Further creativity is developed through devising and building on improvisations skills. The Drama technologies are introduced to develop students' skills in lighting, sound and set design. These aspects are linked to the NCEA senior Drama curriculum which is a literacy-based subject. Literacy credits are gained through drama, and it is a university approved subject at NCEA level.

Course Overview

Term 1
Improvisation- Students learn to work in a group effectively.
Students learn the skills of improvisation, thinking on their feet, accepting offers and problem solving.
Techniques of drama- Confidence in using voice, body, movement and use of space to create a character.
Students learn the process of creating character and build their public speaking skills in group settings.

Term 2
Physical Theatre- Students learn the features of this theatre form through the history of 'Slap stick'- Comedy. They apply their skills of performing with physical stunts and combat skills to produce comedy theatre scenes. The assessments are group based and the students perform to their class peers.
Devised theatre- Students work on creating their own script around a current social issue that is meaningful to them OR they may opt for roles working with senior students on the production which is 'Shuriken' in 2025.

Semester A
Improvisation- Theatre sports competition with Nelson College for Girls'- Students learn to work in a group effectively.
Students learn the skills of improvisation, thinking on their feet, accepting offers and problem solving.
Techniques of drama- Confidence in using voice, body, movement and use of space to create a character.
Publick speaking within small groups.

Semester B
Physical Theatre- Students learn the features of this theatre form through the history of Physical- Slapstick comedy theatre. They apply their skills of performing of slapstick comedy, physical stunts within a group setting.
Devised theatre- Students work on creating their own script around a current issue that is meaningful to them OR opt for roles within the senior production which is 'Shuriken' in 2025.

Pathway

Year 10 Drama teaches valuable life skills which are essential for 21st Century learners. You will learn the skills of literacy, communication, confidence, collaboration, creativity, and empathy. Students work on Literacy skills towards level one NCEA in small groups creating and writing scripts to develop meaningful stories relating to today's world. Pathways include Lighting and Sound Engineering, Set Design, Law, Medicine, Communications, Public Speaking, Analytics, Human Resources, Event Management, Teaching and the Creative Industries.

Assessment Information

Students receive verbal and written feedback regularly as they work through each assessment.
Assessments are graded in line with Level 5-6 of the curriculum.
Performances are videoed and there may be an opportunity for parents to view their work within a performance- i.e.- The senior play.
