Trades Academy Programme (TOTSTA)

Course Description

The Top of the South Trades Academy TOTSTA offers 16 different courses that provide training for students off-site at either NMIT or Whenua Iti.

These courses are designed for students who want to remain at school, but are also wanting to gain some vocational (trades) training. Courses are offered at NCEA Level 2 and NCEA Level 3 and each course offers around 20 credits.

Applications for these courses open in August for the following year.

This course works best in conjunction with our Year 12  or Year 13 Vocational Pathways classes. Enrolment does not guarantee acceptance.  All applicants are interviewed to ascertain their suitability for TOTSTA courses based on their history of attendance, attitude and their ability to commit to these programmes.  

The NMIT courses are run every Friday from February through to October, these include courses like Health and Support Services, Sport and Exercise, Automotive eVelocity etc

The Whenua iti courses are 16 days each course, these are held 4 times throughout the first or second half of the year and each consists of 4 day + 3 night blocks , these include Emergency and Response, Environmental Science, Cellar Operations etc.  

The dates are set in advance, students are required to attend all of the 4 weeks to complete the credits.

Pathway

TOTSTA courses lead to further study at NMIT. Students experience a taste of tertiary study which eases the pathway to studying fulltime at NMIT.
