English

English is a compulsory subject at Nelson College for Year 9 to Year 12 students and an optional subject in Year 13.  Our courses are designed to be enjoyable and challenging for students of all skill levels and we hope to instil a life-time love of language and literature.

Junior students

Junior students are introduced to English as an academic subject through a theme based programme. Lessons are grounded in the teaching of core literacy skills and we provide support for students with literacy problems through the learning support class, the Lexia programme and targeted reading tuition.

Senior students

Senior students (Year 11 – Year 13) are placed in tailored courses designed to provide the best chance of success and work towards NCEA qualifications.
We also provide enrichment opportunities which begin in Year 9 and culminate with a Scholarship programme in Year 13.
