Physical Education and Health
The Junior Curriculum: Core Physical Education is taught at Nelson College in Years 9 and 10 for two periods each week. The course aims to provide learning experiences in a wide range of interactive and physical activities with a strong emphasis on cooperation, fair play and skills development.
The Senior Curriculum: In Years 11, 12 and 13 students are offered the opportunity to study Physical Education at NCEA level as well as New Zealand scholarship. Over the three years the course consists of theoretical topics and practical elements including participation in athletics, volleyball, touch football, badminton, golf and basketball. Students are encouraged to begin this subject at NCEA Level 1 and follow on, however they may begin NCEA study at Level 2 or Level 3.
Health Education is taught as part of the junior programme at Nelson College. The course aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions and develop attitudes that will enhance their decision making and personal well-being. The key units of study are: accepting others, nutrition, drug education, communication and sexuality education.
